The International Society for Clinical Biostatistics (ISCB) was founded in 1978 to stimulate research into the principles and methodology used in the design and analysis of clinical research and to increase the relevance of statistical theory to the real world of clinical medicine.

Like previous annual conferences of ISCB, the 2017 conference will provide an international scientific forum for exchange of theory, methods and applications of biostatistics in medical research among clinicians, statisticians and members of other disciplines related to clinical practice, such as epidemiologists, clinical chemists and clinical pharmacologists.

Host city

Vigo is a unique city in Galicia, the autonomous historical region at the NW of Spain. It´s the perfect combination of a traditional and historic location, sourrounded by splendid beaches and mountains, with a modern, industrial and innovative city.

This unique personality is reflected in its streets and neighbourhoods. The heart of the city was built around the fishing port. Vigo’s downtown is nowadays bursting with commercial and cultural activity. The city’s growth during the 19th and 20th centuries was so fast, that it absorbed the neighbouring villages and towns without giving them time to integrate into the urban structure. You will discover charming spots all around the city neighbourhoods, as well as natural areas for recreational activities.

University of Vigo

The University of Vigo, created as an independent institution in 1990, is a young and innovative organization that offers more than 50 degrees in three campuses located at Vigo, Ourense and Pontevedra. More than 20.000 students are registered in the three campuses, and about 1200 teachers are presently lecturing.

The institution offers degrees in all areas of knowledge, with special focus on the scientific-technological field. Some of the degrees are unique within the Galician university system and not very common in the rest of the Spanish universities: Telecommunication Engineering, Mining Engineering and Marine Sciences in the campus of Vigo, Tourism in the campus of Ourense and Fine Arts in the Campus of Pontevedra. The University of Vigo has repeatedly appeared in international rankings such as the World Top 500 Shanghai Ranking (2011, 2012) and the Times Higher Education Top 150 Under 50 Ranking (2016), which emphasize its international outlook, industry income and research citations.

Several of the research teams of the University of Vigo share the novel Center for Biomedical Research (CINBIO), which was launched in 2009 to promote the collaboration with local hospitals and biomedical industry. CINBIO hosts the Biostatistics & Epidemiology research unit, where some of the researchers at the Statistics Department perform their biostatistical advise and cooperate with clinicians and physicians.

The main administrative buildings of the University of Vigo, as well as some of its Faculties, are located at the Lagoas-Marcosende Campus. This is a spectacular complex designed by two of the best Spanish architects: Enric Miralles and Alfonso Penela.

The venue of the conference is the Mar de Vigo Convention Centre and Auditorium, an impressive beachfront building designed by the Galician architect César Portela and inaugurated in 2011. The ocean is always present through its large windows. It raises in a privileged place between the façade of the fishing port of Vigo and the dockyards, with some spectacular views of the estuary and its surroundings.

The Convention Centre is 5 minutes walking from the historical centre of Vigo and also at a walking distance from some of the best hotels and restaurants. The building covers more than 23.000 m2 devoted to an auditorium with capacity for 1.428 people, several multipurpose rooms and a large public area with cafeteria and restaurant. The roof terrace offers spectacular views of the harbour and the estuary of Vigo.

It´s an ideal venue for any type of events, meetings and conferences.

The Local Organizing Committee is pleased to be part of this project. We are sure that the conference will be a great experience for the entire biostatistical community.
