About Vigo

Vigo, known as the “Gateway to the Atlantic,” is the largest city in northwestern Spain with a population of about 300,000. It is located on a 20 mile long estuary and boasts beautiful beaches and outstanding water sports facilities.

Near the historical towns of Santiago de Compostela in Spain and Porto in Portugal, Vigo is located in the center the so-called Rías Baixas (lower bays), a region that enjoys high summer temperatures, with the benefit of mild winters.

Vigo's old district is not as expansive as some of Galicia's other historic quarters, but it does cover an interesting area on the slopes above the marina.

High points of this zone are a number of beautiful plazas along with buildings and streets that have survived from the medieval period and show the humble beginnings of the original settlement.

Other draws to Vigo are its numerous beaches, some of which are claimed to be the best in northern Spain.

It also has some excellent museums and a multitude of high quality restaurants serving the freshest of seafood, and even the remains of an old Celtic fort town.

For walkers there are opportunities to walk on the hills above the city with spectacular views of the bay down below.

The St. James Way through Vigo is one of the most beautiful sections of the Portuguese version of the way to Santiago, as it runs along the coast. This coastal detour of the Portuguese Way crosses the Minho River’s mouth. This pilgrimage route then continues parallel to the coast along A Guarda, Oia, Baiona, Nigrán and Vigo.

All told Vigo is a city with a wealth of attractions.
